Andamooka Matrix Opal Cab in Sterling Silver Pendant, 20 inch Chain

Natural treated matrix opal from the Andamooka fields in Australia mounted in a fancy sterling silver pendant with dual ear bail. This opal type was made famous as "The Queens Opal" when a large cabochon of high-grade opal was set in a platinum choker as a gift for Queen Elizabeth on her first official State Visit to the country. This 20.3x13.7mm opal is a matrix type, not a crystal opal, comprised of mostly host rock with small pockets of silica. This opal can be light in color and does not readily show play-of-color, so it is typically treated with a hot sugar solution and acid to blacken the host rock and bring out the tiny bits of color.
